Maggie Gee and Jacob Ross will be addressing the role of protest in literature, the subtle and overt ways in which it has shaped modern attitudes and thinking, and more specifically, Jacob's own process in building a convincing fictional narrative from factual research. Jacob will read an extract from his story and address the case of the New Cross Fire which was one of the triggers for the Brixton Riots in the 1980s.

Maggie and Jacob will also be questioning what we mean by the term 'protest literature' since so much of English literature is 'protest' -- although that aspect is often overlooked or ignored.
